ELIGIBILITY

Participants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Students and/or teachers must be living in Pomona Valley or surrounding communities; and

  2. Participating teachers must be members of the Musician’s Club of Pomona Valley.

FORMAT

Competition will be held in-person and open to public (no children 4 years of age and under). Changes might have to be made in order to comply with current LA County COVID-19 guidelines.

All first placed winners in divisions requiring accompanists will be announced after each division. All other placed winners will be announced at the Winners Concert that will be held the same evening of the second day of competition, October 22, 2022. Winners not in attendance will forfeit their awards, which include monetary awards.

Winners may be asked to perform at various Outreach concerts.

DIVISIONS:

Piano/String/Chamber
Junior: Age 9 and under
Intermediate: Age 10 - 13
Senior: Age 14 - 19

*** All different string instruments will be competing in the same respective divisions.

Voice/Wind
Junior: Age 10 – 13 
Intermediate: Age 14 – 18
Senior: Age 19 – 22

 *** All different wind instruments will be competing in the same respective divisions.

APPLICATION FEES: 

Solo Divisions: $70
Chamber Music: $45 per applicant
* Application fees are non-refundable.
** Late application fee incurs an additional $30/applicant.

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS:

All works must be performed from memory except for Chamber Divisions. 

SOLO DIVISIONS

TWO contrasting repertoire selections:

  1. ONE from either the Baroque or Classical periods

  2. ONE from either the Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary periods

CHAMBER DIVISIONS

ONE selection required, though TWO may be performed if it is within the allotted time.

*** If performing TWO repertoires, selections must be as follows:

  1. ONE from either the Baroque or Classical periods

  2. ONE from either the Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary periods

VOICE DIVISION

Three categories are available: Art Songs, Opera, or Musical Theater

Participants must perform TWO songs, each from different categories (i.e. one art song and one opera aria; or one opera aria and one musical theater work, etc).

ALLOTTED TIMINGS 

Junior Division: 6 minutes
Intermediate Division: 7 minutes
Senior Division: 8 minutes
Chamber Music: 8 minutes

GENERAL RULES:

  • A previous First Place winner must enter a higher division.

  • Contestants must provide the original copy of the composition for the judges. Measures must be numbered at the beginning of each line. Photocopies will be automatically disqualified.

  • Contestants need to be in their place of competition 15 minutes before the start of their division and stay until the end of that division.

  • Late contestants will not be allowed to perform unless by reason of emergency.

  • Time limit will be strictly observed. Contestants exceeding the time limit will be stopped without penalty.

  • Stopping a work during the performance is at the discretion of the judges only.

  • No teacher may accompany their own student(s).

  • Walker Music Competition does NOT provide an accompanist. Therefore, please make your own arrangements.

  • Parents and Teachers are not allowed to interact with the judges.

  • The judges’ decisions are final.

  • Judges’ comments will be sent to teachers.

  • The Committee reserves the right to make changes to a division (including, but not limited to, combining, dividing or canceling) subject to the number of participants. Teachers will be notified in advance of any changes made.

  • No video and audio recording or photography will be permitted during the competition.

  • No children 4 years of age and under will be allowed in the audience.

  • Formal recital attire and dress shoes are required. Students wearing improper attire will not be considered for an award.
